On the morning of December 6th 2016, engineering students at the University of Toronto installed a monument commemorating the 14 women who lost their lives at the École Polytechnique massacre 27 years prior. The monument featured 14 silhouettes, each with a white ribbon. When someone placed their hand on the podiums in front of the silhouettes, the ribbons lit up. As multiple people placed their hands on the podiums, more of the ribbons lit up. The installation was intended to make students pause and think about their role in the fight to end violence against women, and to signify that we must all stand together to end violence and abuse.
